One of the things we’ll go over before listing your home is what you plan to leave for the buyer. Smart devices belong in that conversation, especially something you recently bought and would like to use in your next place. Tell us what you have in mind. You don’t need to know whether a device should stay or how to transfer its account before we meet. We can start with your preferences and talk through what needs to happen before your home goes on the market.

For a sale in South Puget Sound, that means making sure buyers understand what’s included and allowing yourself time to prepare the equipment you’re leaving. A little attention before listing can save you from trying to answer these questions while you’re packing.

Let’s Settle What’s Included Before Showings

Suppose you’d like to keep your smart thermostat. A buyer who sees it on the wall may expect it to come with the house, so we’ll want to discuss removing or replacing it before photography and showings. We’ll also help make sure the written agreement reflects what you intend to leave. Walking through the house together is a useful way to have this conversation. Open the apps you use as we go; they may remind you of equipment you rarely handle, such as a leak sensor under the sink.

We’ll want to account for the accessories, too. The lights may rely on a hub beside your router, and that hub is easy to pack with your internet equipment. Knowing what belongs together helps you leave what the buyer needs to use the features included in the sale.

As you look through the devices, take a few photos of their labels. Having the brand and model handy makes finding instructions easier later, without another trip behind an appliance. Keep those details with any manuals you already have.

The Accounts Need Attention, Too

Leaving a doorbell installed doesn’t end your recording subscription or disconnect it from your phone. Once you know it’s staying, check the provider’s instructions for transferring ownership. The process varies by device. Deleting an app may leave steps unfinished, and a factory reset may be only part of what’s required. Looking up the instructions early gives you time to contact support without having to squeeze that call into moving day.

Your apps and recent statements can also help you find paid services attached to the equipment. Ask the provider how to cancel or transfer each subscription and what the buyer needs to arrange. Keep their answer with your device information so you can refer to it when you’re ready.

Financed or leased equipment needs an earlier conversation with us. Bring any agreements for systems such as solar panels or batteries while we’re preparing to list. Those obligations need to be addressed during the sale, and we can help identify the questions to ask and who can answer them.

You Can Prepare Without Disconnecting Everything Yet

You’ll still be using the house as you get ready to move. The smart lock needs to work while you’re coming and going, so we can coordinate when to remove your access and hand things over. Check whether the manufacturer’s transfer process requires an internet connection before scheduling your service cancellation. Completing those steps before the last day gives you time to reach support when something doesn’t go as expected.

Before resetting cameras, save any recordings you’d like to keep. Remember guest codes and access you’ve shared with family members as you follow the manufacturer’s directions. Your personal passwords should remain private, with the buyer establishing their own account.

Leave the manuals and setup information somewhere easy to find. A note explaining where the hub is plugged in or how to operate something manually can be helpful while the buyer gets settled. You know the house well; a few details from you can save them some guesswork.

Before the boxes are sealed, refer back to the agreed inclusions and set aside the remotes and other accessories that are staying. We can go over the agreement with you whenever you have a question about an item.

You’re welcome to bring up these details long before you’re ready to list. Whether you’re planning a move or simply wondering about your South Puget Sound home, we’re here to talk.
